Originally studying Music, I attained a Bachelor degree from the University of Newcastle. Realising this wasn’t my calling, I spent several years traveling, spending months at a time being chased by stick wielding Shifus while studying Kung Fu in China, or working and snowboarding in New Zealand. When it was time to return to reality I gave in to my ever present passion for making, enrolling in Jewellery and Object Design at Design Centre Enmore. Always being creative, my interest in this field was piqued when my sister dragged me to a silver jewellery course at the local community college. With limited skills and meagre tools I could already see the possibilities.
Heavily influenced by street art and popular culture I replicate this style in my creations, the quirky nature of these influences is an almost constant element of my designs, which are often interactive and a little bit cheeky. I’m also captivated by the lines and colours of contemporary illustrators whose styles border on animation with a hint of graffiti art.
With drawing not my strong suit, I turned to jewellery and object design as my means of creative outlet. I like the idea that your work isn’t just hanging on a wall, but being used as a means of expression. The wearables I create are often interactive, with a simple mechanism or quirky concept adding a layer of fun. The forms I use are quite geometric with easily recognisable motifs and icons to help the viewer understand my message.
I utilize an eclectic mix of materials and techniques to make my objects and wearables, both conventional and not so much. Trained in a wide range of jewellery and silversmithing techniques, I use whatever method is most suited to the design and concept.
My production work is predominately produced using Computer Aided Design and 3D printing, while exhibition pieces are created using traditional fabrication practices, but I am constantly looking for new and different ways of doing things. Silver is a common ingredient in my work, but I like to offset this jewellery standard with something unorthodox like plastic strings or party tablecloths.
Anything is a potential material.
